Okay, the title is purposely an attention grab. But if you check out:

you’ll see I’m not making anything up.

The link brings you to a lineup selection screen, and if you pay 5$ you enter in a competition to win 1 million dollars. But, how do you fill out the lineup? We at CNG Analytics want to give you a tool to make it easier.

There are several constraints you need to fit into the problem; you want to maximize the number of projected fantasy points but by only using your budget of 50,000$ and ensuring your lineup contains 1QB, 2RB, 3WR, 1D, 1TE and a flex player.

At CNG we approach this problems 2 ways. 1. The classical way:

Lineup generated by classical optimization (image by author)

Here we’ve implemented a classical algorithm to determine the set of players which maximize our projected fantasy points, while maintaining our salary and lineup (player position) constraints.

We can also try to be more sophisticated and implement the solution using a quantum algorithm.

Both lineups are ideal because they use up all our available salary space. You can see both algorithms suggest very different players. Check in next week to see which one did better!

EDIT! We ran the numbers based on these lineups: the classical algorithm scored 67 points and the quantum algorithm scored 97.8! Quantum wins!

We still have a long way to go as we optimize these algorithms; in particular we have to pay better attention to injury status and playing time as there were some members of the lineup that didn’t score. We hope you’ll join us along for the ride as we continue to get better!
